On Mongolia’s Commitment to Religious Freedom and Religious Activity Permits
The United States continues its commitment to protecting and promoting religious freedom around the world– a core democratic value and a cornerstone of human dignity. Religious freedom is not just an American value; it is a universal human right, essential to the foundation of any free society. Here in Mongolia, the U.S. notes that the Mongolian people have had a history and tradition of protecting religious freedom that traces its origins to the Mongol Empire.
The U.S. Embassy has longstanding concerns with the challenges that religious groups face when obtaining legal permission to operate in Mongolia. The legal process remains unresolved and, in some cases, has worsened. The moratorium on new Religious Activity Permits remains in place. This year, we have seen deeply troubling developments of some religious groups facing cancellation of permits without sufficient grounds, while others have endured excessive scrutiny of their places of worship beyond the usual legally required inspections. When members of one faith are not permitted to practice freely, it is a challenge to the rights of all in Mongolia to exercise freedom of religion and belief.
The U.S. Embassy remains committed to advocating for the equal application of religious activity permits. We continue to raise this issue at the highest levels, both here in Ulaanbaatar and in Washington. As Secretary Rubio has said, “Religious freedom has no greater friend than the United States.”
