At the General Debate of the 81st UN General Assembly on 22 September 2026, President Khurelsukh Ukhnaa formally announced Mongolia’s candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the 2048–2049 term. He framed the bid as part of a broader call for Security Council reform—expanding both permanent and non-permanent membership, ensuring equitable representation for developing countries, and making the Council more open and transparent—while noting that Mongolia is one of 58 UN members that have never served on the Council. The announcement came on the eve of the 65th anniversary of Mongolia’s 1961 accession as the UN’s 101st member and was underpinned by its peacekeeping record of more than 23,000 military and police personnel deployed since 2002, including current service with the multinational Gang Suppression Force in Haiti. The far-off target date is consistent with the long lead times typical of Asia-Pacific group campaigning; actual election would be expected around 2047 and would require a two-thirds majority in the General Assembly.
