Canada Expands Mongolia Aviation Access as Ottawa Deal Allows Direct Passenger Operations and Could Make Ulaanbaatar the Entry Point for Thirty-Day Visa-Free Gobi Geopark and Steppe Adventures

Canada's expanded air agreement with Mongolia creates the legal basis for direct flights, but the overlooked trade story is demand asymmetry. Canadians may enter Mongolia visa-free for up to 30 days while Mongolian citizens require a Canadian visitor visa. Mongolia has simultaneously opened its first national geopark which is upgrading northern tourism access and has recorded strong inbound growth. The first credible leisure case therefore points towards Canada-origin expeditions through Ulaanbaatar, rather than automatically balanced two-way traffic. No airline, gateway, timetable or launch date has been confirmed.

Canada-Mongolia Air Rights Create Access but No Scheduled Route

Transport Canada expanded the bilateral air transport agreement on 3 July 2026. The change permits direct services for the first time, allows each country up to three weekly passenger- combination flights, removes weekly limits on all-cargo operations and grants open fifth-freedom rights for cargo services. The original agreement was concluded in 2018, making this its first expansion.
