U.S. Celebrates 250th Independence Day
The United States, Mongolia’s key "Third Neighbor" partner, marked its 250th Independence Day under the slogan "Freedom 250." Despite a record-breaking heatwave of 42–43°C and a sudden downpour that canceled the Washington D.C. parade, the 47th U.S. President, Donald Trump, delivered a patriotic speech. He proclaimed the dawn of a new American "Golden Age" while warning of the persistent threats of communism.
"Freedom 250" in Ulaanbaatar
The U.S. Embassy in Ulaanbaatar hosted its traditional reception to mark the milestone. U.S. Ambassador Richard L. Buangan opened the event by emphasizing that democracy is a continuous journey rather than a destination. He highly praised Mongolia's vibrant democracy as a regional model and reaffirmed that the U.S. stands proudly as Mongolia's trusted Third Neighbor. Next year, the two nations will celebrate the 40th anniversary of establishing formal diplomatic relations (1987).
A Deep-Rooted 150-Year History
Although official ties began in 1987, historical connections date back over 150 years: The Earliest Travelers (1860s): Former Ambassador Jonathan Addleton discovered an 1862 Manchu travel permit issued to an American named "Mr. Polosi" to transit Outer Mongolia. Shortly after, New Hampshire journalist Thomas Knox traveled through the region, publishing detailed notes on Mongolian hospitality, culture, and political landscapes.
Early 20th Century Ties: A young Herbert Hoover (later the 31st U.S. President) visited Mongolia and met the Bogd Khan. American businesses established a local distillery, and famous explorer Roy Chapman Andrews led scientific expeditions in the Gobi Desert. An enclave in Ulaanbaatar known as "American Ridge" (American Denz) introduced the first Ford cars and Harley-Davidson motorcycles to the country.
High-Level Visits
A major historic milestone occurred in 1944 when U.S. Vice President Henry Wallace became the first top-tier American official to visit Mongolia, accompanied by scholar Owen Lattimore. This wartime visit was followed decades later by First Lady Hillary Clinton (1995), President George W. Bush (2005), Vice President Joe Biden (2011), and Secretary of State John Kerry (2016), who famously called Mongolia an "oasis of democracy in Asia."
